General Information
The Seneca claimed the title of the largest tribe in the Iroquois League. The Iroquois League includes the Oneida, Mohawk, Onondaga, Seneca and Cayuga. Later the Tuscarora, or "shirt wearing people" became the 6th Nation to join, fleeing from the British. A reservation is a place where people that lived before the establishment of a government live now. The government will set aside a plot of land, where the native's word is law. Nearly 10,000 Seneca live on reservations in the Cattargaurus, Allegany, and Tonawanda reservations, with some also settled in Oklahoma, and Ontario, Canada; they are the only Nation to own a U.S. city, Salamanca, which is on land owned by the Allegany Indian reservation.
The Iroquois
The five tribes occupied territory from the East to the West, the Seneca being the "keepers of the western door". The official language is Ogwehoweh, in which their name translates "great hill people." The Seneca Nation has 5,400 members living in the Allegheny River valley in Western New York.
Seneca Land
The Seneca tribe possessed territory from the Genesee River to Canandaigua Lake in Western New York, living in long houses. The tribe's villages were well fortified with wooden fences. They relied on agriculture for food, growing three main plants: corn, squash, and beans, which they referred to as deohako, "the life supporters".
Warfare
The Seneca were great conquerors, skilled at warfare, and were fierce adversaries to any tribe who tried to resist their takeover. Iroquois warriors were also believed to have participated in ritual cannibalism, and were also known to torture their prisoners.
Politics
Iroquois politics were civilized, in comparison to the one tribes in all of the North-American Native cultures. Ironically, the Seneca women were the ones that voted, an idea that seemed backwards to the colonists. Leaders usually held their posts for life, but could be kicked out if they became incompetent or corrupt. The Seneca political system included a constitution, which is believed to have been a basis for the American constitution. Once the Europeans came to the Americas, the Seneca became more civilized, as they traded fur, information, and land for guns, food, and safety from other Europeans. The Seneca often traded furs, as beaver fur was popular in Europe. Beaver fur was a main trade item, because beaver fur hats were symbols of wealth and power in Europe. As a result, beavers were hunted to extinction.
Other Facts
Another Seneca tribe are the Ohio Seneca. Although they did speak Ogwehoweh, they were never a part of the Iroquois League,
because of they were a part of the Algonquin Indian tribes, fighting alongside them against some of the Iroquois.
